Harness the Force…
Some stories never lose their appeal. A friend recently reminded me of the power of focus. He related the phenomenon through an event that took place decades ago. He, his parents and his brothers and sisters were on a family picnic.
When it came to time to light a fire, put the kettle on, his dad realized he’d left the primus stove at home.
Now, this was serious. Homemade sandwiches, tomato and onion, cheese and onion, ham, cheese and tomato, prepared the night before, wrapped and tied in greaseproof paper, letting the ingredients seep into the bread overnight, could not be consumed without the freshly made tea, drunk from the big mugs, boiled and brewed on the picnic site. They had the kettle, water from a nearby well, tea, sugar, and milk.
But no stove.
Then his dad remembered he’d got something in the glove compartment of the Morris Oxford; a magnifying glass. With this glass in hand, he gathered some scutch grass, light dried-up twigs, and went to work.
It took a bit longer than using a primus stove. His dad had to make a suspension for the kettle, painstakingly hold the magnifying glass over the dried grass, and then fan and blow the subsequent smoulderings into a flame.
But it worked.
Focusing with the power of the sun’s rays, persevering with the glass on target, the heat caught the tinder grass, then ignited, and flamed into a roaring, crackling, blazing fire that helped make the most delicious and memorable tea that my friend has ever drunk in his whole life.
Which brings us back to the point; the light of the sun was everywhere. It warmed the skin, grew the grass, brightened the day. It beamed into everything and spread itself widely, warm, and pleasantly diffused.
But when it was captured through the glass, drawn, focused to a particular point, the gathered power of the rays brought fire and conflagration to life.
The sun hadn’t changed, but the power of the rays was gathered and focused. It’s like the human mind.
Left to our own devices, we tend to live in warm comfortable states. Thoughts, ideas, dreams, float about with no direction, no focus, no purpose, and the ideas and aspirations usually remain undone.
But when we still the mind, focus the energy on one objective, it’s like driving the mighty power of the sun’s rays into a directed force, and it can ignite any idea into a living reality.
And it applies to any pursuit.
