Good Morning.

You'll see an old picture of Kilmore Quay here.

When we were youngsters, in the 50's, there were a few men in that village who were regarded as what would today be called Elder Statesmen.

They were the instinctive leaders in the community. They were wise, experienced, thoughtful, tough, but all had a streak of kindness which drew people to them, particularly the young.

None of them was perfect; but they all had an ability to connect, a tremendous respect for their fellow-Man, and an innate pride in their contribution to the community. They were accomplished at what they did for a living, whether fishing, keeping shop, or working the land. and they were devoted to their native place and the people in it. They were respected and admired as the community seniors.

They dispensed advice to those who sought it, made observations which many of us took as advice, and they generally behaved and lived as exemplary human beings, who in later years, towered in the lives of many of us who knew them.

At this long weekend, celebrate it with the health, the safety, the well-being of yourself, your loved ones, and just to keep a balance and a pleasant bewilderment, those for whom you feel you might have a lesser regard.

They, like us, have lives and problems, difficulties, fears, worries and of course losses and bereavements too.

It helps to remember, as Tommy Howlin used to say to us, "Yiz 're no betther nor worse than any one else."

Have a safe, healthy and a happy weekend.
