18/8/14 What’s mindfulness?
There’s a great deal of talk these days of being mindful, and how it can transform your life. And I’d be inclined to agree with that, specially as I’ve seen it figure in peoples’ lives in a very practical and helpful way. So, what’s so good about it? I believe that a great benefit is the fact that it helps train the mind to go quiet. Now that’s something a lot of people have forgotten how to do, if they ever knew in the first place. And quiet in the mind is what settles the turmoil, gets rid of the noise, and allows the mind come to rest. It’s said that we’ve somewhere between 60,000 and 90,000 thoughts, ideas, memories, associations, imaginings, going through our poor beleagured heads every day, every 24 hours, without stop, relentlessly. Small wonder we get frazzled. It’s tiring to even think about it. And on top of that, we have to try to focus, regularly, with all that activity, distraction, going on. Mindfulness, concentration, focus, awareness, attention, are all shades of the same meaning. And being aware of that, consciously, constantly, is the kernel of being mindful, or perhaps, more accurately, mindfully aware. Is this just being fussy, pedantic, overly correct about the description? I believe not, and when you see the next mail, you’ll get a very good insight to the way vague awareness can affect your day-to-day life.
