Worried Sick…

‘I’m worried sick’, he said. The man was right. Worry is a sickener. It gets under your skin, tightens your stomach, distracts the mind, ruins lives.

It isn’t good for us. Recent research shows it to be the greatest source of illness, unhappiness, misery.

And it’s been around long before  ’08 and the Crash. It’s been a feature of the Human Condition forever.

But not everyone worries. I’ve a pal who’s been through Hell, come out the other side, been through Hell again and emerged once more. And though he’s been concerned, I’ve never seen him worried.

We first met on a Retreat in South London in the sixties. He was there because he’d just come off drugs and needed peace and quiet, and counselling. I just wanted the peace and quiet. He’d watched me do some breathing and wanted to know what it was about.

I explained as well as I could, and he took to it with a heart and a soul. Being the man he was, and is, he brought a bit of heart, a bit of will, and belief to the practice. He’s been doing it ever since.

He’s made a good life for himself, and has succeeded in the real sense. A sense of purpose, a belief, and a will to do, have always been features of his character, and his world has always reflected these solid qualities. Even in hard times, when most people would have worried, he didn’t. He got actively concerned and got himself to do what needed to be done.

He has been adamant that his breathing, and a spirituality, have been the bedrock of his life.

While speaking with him, I realised for the umpteenth time, our ability to influence ourselves and our lives, and how we can let it happen unconsciously, to us, or take decisions and guide ourselves well.

As a basic practice of an overall regime, Breathwork is priceless. It forms the foundation of a system for effective living.

It’s the physical discipline which drives the body into good health, and the mental influence that reinforces it daily.

So get into it, or back into it. Commit to a 28-day -programme, just to get the habit.

Breathing ventilates the system and rests the mind.

Get it started. Do it daily. See it through.

Then you can reassess and go again. Or do a variation.
o edit.
